Shirley Skufca Hickman 
Don't Be Give Up! 

Brought up in Crested Butte, Colorado, Shirley Skufca Hickman was nurtured by a family that respected learning. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Drama at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, a Master of Arts Degree in Speech at California State University, Fresno and a second Master of Arts Degree in Educational Administration from California State University, Bakersfield.
 
During her thirty-six years in the California public school system, she taught English, speech, drama, reading, civics and modern dance.  Her extra-curricular duties included directing speech programs, plays, and choreographing musicals.

While teaching English and speech at California State Polytechnic University., she also supervised student teachers.

Mrs. Hickman served two terms on the Governing Board of the California Association of Teachers of English and has held leadership positions on the state, regional and local levels.

EDUCATION COLUMNIST

Currently she operates a private tutoring business for students from the second grade to adults. She lives in Porterville, California with her husband, Joe. They have one son and two grandsons.
